International groups curious about everyday Norwegian outdoor culture rather than extreme adventures, and who value safety, tailoring and clear guidance

Example activities – Outdoor Hadeland

Our friluftsliv experiences are not one fixed route, but a toolbox of modules that can be combined and adapted. For each group we design a tailored programme based on season, group size and desired activity level, ranging from easy forest walks and short summit hikes on peaks around 500 metres above sea level to longer day hikes, canoe trips, cycling adventures or even a night spent sleeping outdoors. These experiences can be arranged as day trips or as longer stays, depending on the group’s wishes and interests.

Guests can choose from a range of nature-focused accommodations. Many groups enjoy staying at Helgaker Gård, a charming farm hotel set in Hadeland’s open cultural landscape, or in cozy forest cabins at Åstjern, perfect for outdoor activities and evenings by the fire. You can also combine your stay with the welcoming, local touch of Hotell Hadeland, the historic atmosphere of Granavolden Hotel & Guesthouse, or the added comfort of Sanner Hotel and Lily Country Club.

What friluftsliv in Hadeland can include

Summit walks on extinct volcanoes
Walk to gentle volcanic peaks with big views but modest elevations, typically up to around 500 metres above sea level. Routes follow forest paths and old tracks before opening up to panoramas over lakes, farmland and the inland hills. Guides or route descriptions explain how these ancient volcanoes shaped the landscape and why Norwegians often call them “nice little hills”, even when they feel like a real achievement.

Forest hikes in varied terrain
Choose between shorter loop walks and longer day hikes through different types of woodland and open terrain. Some routes wind through dense spruce forest and moss-covered ground; others cross light birch woodland, marshes and open ridges with views. Distances and elevation are adjusted to the group, making it easy to match both beginners and more experienced walkers.

Canoe trips on lakes and calm waters
Glide across calm lakes in stable canoes, surrounded by forested shores and bird life. Depending on season and conditions, we use everything from small forest tarns to broader stretches of lake and fjord like inlets. Canoe modules can be standalone half days or combined with a hike, a picnic or a campfire dinner by the water’s edge.

Cycling through forests, cultural landscapes and along lakes
Explore Hadeland on e-bikes along quiet gravel and country roads that link forests, farms and lakes. Routes can focus more on the wooded uplands, on open cultural landscapes with red farmhouses and fields, or on stretches along fjords and lakes with viewpoints and bathing spots. The tempo is relaxed, with time for breaks, photos and coffee.

Winter friluftsliv, skis, snowshoes and campfires
In winter, the same areas invite you to experience classic Norwegian winter outdoor life. Programmes can include cross country skiing on prepared tracks, snowshoe hikes in the forest, tobogganing, kick sledding or ice fishing on a frozen lake, always combined with warm drinks and a simple outdoor meal around an open fire. Distances and difficulty are adapted so that guests can enjoy the snow, even if it is their first time on skis or snowshoes.

Regenerative friluftsliv, optional elements
For groups who wish to add a regenerative dimension, we can weave in light, practical activities that support local nature and communities.

Citizen science
Use simple apps to register plants, insects, birds, animal tracks or trees along hikes and bike rides, creating small but useful data points for regional biodiversity research and nature management.

Edible invasive plants
Learn about selected invasive species and, when appropriate, help map or carefully harvest small amounts that local chefs transform into creative dishes, turning a challenge into food and storytelling.

Harvesting fruit, berries and herbs
In season, join shared harvests of surplus fruit, berries or herbs from local gardens and farms that would otherwise go to waste. Part of the harvest becomes juice, jams or condiments guests can taste or take home; part supports local producers and community initiatives.

These elements are always optional and can be dialled up or down depending on group interest. For some, a short introduction and a few simple tasks are enough; others may want to spend more time on fieldwork and conversations.

Accommodation, hotel or “hytte” in the forest
Norwegian friluftsliv is not only about the hours on the trail; it is also about where and how you stay. Our hotels are ideal for groups who want easy access to both nature and cultural highlights, with comfortable rooms, full service and short transfers to trailheads, lakes and activity areas.

For a more immersive experience, guests can stay at a small cluster of cabins in the woods, with plenty of beds, shared living rooms and dining spaces, and a strong sense of being surrounded by nature. Evenings here mean meals made of local produce, candles, wood stoves, stargazing and long conversations, the essence of Norwegian friluftsliv and «hygge».

All friluftsliv stays are designed as tailor made programmes. Together with you, we choose the right mix of hikes, summit walks, canoeing, cycling, winter activities, guides and regenerative elements so that the experience fits your guests in every season.
