Example itinerary – Hadeland Highlights
Our Hadeland Highlights experiences are not one fixed route, but a flexible toolbox of memorable encounters that can be mixed and matched. For each group we design a tailored programme that combines culture, friluftsliv, local flavours and creative experiences, from historic hilltop walks and glass art to farm visits, tastings and time out in nature. Pick and combine your favourite elements for a varied journey through the best of Hadeland in one trip.
These experiences can be arranged as day trips or as longer stays, depending on the group’s wishes and interests. The sample below illustrates a seven-day itinerary with a day-by-day programme, but both content and duration can, of course, be adapted.
Guests can choose from a variety of memorable accommodations, ranging from the indulgent comfort of Lily Country Club and the sophisticated atmosphere of Sanner Hotel to the historic charm of Granavolden Hotel & Guesthouse and the welcoming, local touch of Hotell Hadeland. Those looking for a more rural experience can stay at Helgaker Gård, a charming farm hotel set in Hadeland’s open cultural landscape, or unwind in a cozy cabin surrounded by forest at Åstjern.
Day 1 – Arrival and countryside welcome
Arrive in Hadeland and check in at your hotel, where calm surroundings and rural views set the tone for your stay. Depending on your arrival time, you can take a short stroll in the nearby area, enjoy the landscape or simply relax after the journey. In the evening you gather for a cosy welcome dinner, with seasonal local flavours.
Day 2 – Award-winning art and historic glass
In the morning you travel to Kistefos Sculpture Park, one of Europe’s most exciting sculpture parks for contemporary art, where cutting-edge architecture, industrial history and river views meet in the iconic gallery-bridge The Twist. You have time to explore the outdoor sculptures, visit the galleries in season and enjoy a relaxed walk along the river.
In the afternoon you continue to Hadeland Glassverk, a historic village of glassblowing workshops, galleries, design shops and cosy cafés built around one of Norway’s oldest glassworks. Here you can watch the glassblowers at work, browse design and interior stores and take some time to enjoy the atmosphere before returning to your hotel for the evening.
Day 3 – Bees, cheese and a gentle paddle or bike ride
This morning you set out to meet some of Hadeland’s most passionate food producers, starting with Heier Du Rietz, a local beekeeper working with both urban and rural hives. In summer you can join a guided bee safari, learn how landscapes shape flavour and taste a selection of honeys and other sweet treats. The journey continues to Øvre Kjekshus farm, home to award-winning cheeses, where you hear the story of the farm, animal welfare and grazing practices before enjoying a cheese-focused lunch based on the farm’s own products.
Back at the hotel you have a short rest before a gentle afternoon or evening outing: a relaxed canoe trip on calm waters or an easy e-bike ride along quiet roads, rounded off with an informal outdoor dinner by the campfire, where local flavours, simple dishes and stories from the day come together in classic Norwegian friluftsliv style.
Day 4 – Volcano summit, wild berries and farm-to-table cooking
After yesterday’s gentle introduction to Norwegian outdoor life, today you head a little higher on a summit walk to one of Hadeland’s gentle volcanic peaks. Routes follow forest paths and old tracks before opening to wide views over lakes, farmland and inland hills, with a packed lunch from Finnerud farm enjoyed at a scenic viewpoint. In season, you can join a light shared harvest of berries or other local produce along the way, turning what might otherwise go to waste into a resource for both communities and visitors.
In the afternoon you arrive at Finnerud, an organic working farm where animals, fields and kitchen work closely with the seasons. After a short farm walk you gather in the kitchen for a hands-on cooking class, ranging from flatbread baking or jam making to sausage making, fermenting or cheesemaking. You then sit down together to a generous farm-to-table dinner you have helped prepare, a long, cosy evening that rounds off the day in true countryside style.
Day 5 – Handwoven textiles and living history at the folk museum
Enjoy a wholesome breakfast before you travel to Grinakervev, a weaving mill where fine damask and traditional Norwegian garments are created on the looms. Here you can see skilled hands at work, feel the textiles, learn about patterns and traditions and browse the on-site shop for timeless pieces to bring home.
The day continues at Hadeland Folk Museum, an open-air museum with historic farm buildings and exhibitions that show how people in the region have lived for centuries. You see the famous Dynna rune stone, visit the grave of a Viking king and wander among farmyards and interiors that tell stories of everyday rural life through tools, textiles, furniture and architecture. There is ample free time built into the visit, so you can explore the grounds at your own pace.
In the afternoon you travel to Granavollen for a guided historic walk that ties many of the threads together. The walk typically includes visits to the Sister Churches; Nikolaikirken and Mariakirken, Steinhuset with its garden, and the small Telthuset, which today houses exhibitions developed in collaboration with local artists.
Day 6 – Circular fashion, Viking landscapes and dinner behind prison walls
Today, you dive into stories of both circular design and deep history. At Recouture you explore circular fashion and see how old textiles are transformed into new favourites, with the option of a short talk or demonstration on upcycling and slow fashion. From here the route continues to Veien Cultural Heritage Park, where burial mounds, stone settings and a reconstructed longhouse bring pre-Christian Norway to life. Your guide shares stories of power, belief and everyday life before the Viking Age and the coming of Christianity, placing Hadeland’s landscapes into a wider historical context. In the evening you round off the journey in Hønefoss with dinner at Brasserie Fengselet, where local flavours are served within the atmospheric walls of the town’s former prison.
Day 7 – Breakfast and departure
After breakfast, it is time for departure and individual journeys home.
